Kingsday in the Netherlands

On the eve of April 27th, the Netherlands transforms into an orange wonderland every year. Streets are adorned with flags, balloons, and lights celebrating the upcoming King’s Day, the birthday of the king of the Netherlands.

But when the people sleep and the streets are quiet, another type of reveler awakens: the Mumzels.

These small, nocturnal creatures wake up to discover that their world has suddenly been draped in orange. Surprised yet excited, the Mumzels venture outside to explore this orange spectacle.

For them, it’s not just a celebration in honor of the king of the Netherlands, but also their chance to celebrate in their own unique way.

Following Mumzel tradition, they have appointed their own orange Mumzel friend as the king of the Mumzels. This little orange ruler leads his people in a merry plunder of snacks and delicacies stored for the King’s Games in street stalls.

With mischievous grins on their faces, the Mumzels feast until their bellies are round, enjoying every bite of stroopwafels, poffertjes, and orange tompouces.You might wonder if there’s anything left for the people after such a Mumzel raid. But not to worry, in the Netherlands, they are well-prepared for the Mumzel antics during King’s Night.

Extra supplies of cookies and treats are kept in safe places where the little hands of the Mumzels cannot reach.Thus, both the Mumzels and the people can enjoy King’s Day. As the sun rises and the people prepare for the festivities, the Mumzels return to their hideouts, satisfied and ready to dream about the next King’s Night. In this way, the balance is maintained, and everyone, human and Mumzel, can enjoy this special day.
